Just about everyone has seen pictures of the stone monoliths for which Monument Valley is noted. But no picture can truly illustrate the vista that spreads out from the visitors center. To see these stone columns rising from the desert floor is simply breath taking. The road in front of the monuments leads into the eastern reaches of the valley were there are more stone formations and also ruins to be viewed. The road can be traveled by car or in Navajo guide vehicles, but for those that wish to travel it in their in car the road is quite rough in some areas.
The Mittens
As the road heads off to the eastern valley it passes north of John Ford's Point, so called for movie director John Ford. Ford was so taken by the beauty of the scenery of the valley and it's possibilities for movie making that he would move his whole production company into the valley while filming the numerous movies he made in the valley. Part of John Ford's Point is made up of three stone formations called the "Three Sisters".
